Ok Go creates newest video sensation with GPS tracking

Ok Go has always been known for their innovative music videos (a.k.a. “Here It Goes Again” on treadmills). Now, they’re adding another music video sensation with the new release for “Back from Kathmandu.”

For the song, the group gathered roughly 100 friends and fans to parade through 8.5 miles of L.A. streets to spell out “OK Go” using Range Rover’s Pulse of the City app. (Learn more about the free app here).

“Back from Kathmandu” is off of Ok Go’s third album, Of the Blue Colour of the Sky, which debuted in January 2010.

Will Remix for Fame: OK Go’s “White Knuckles” contest

“White Knuckles” is the second single off of OK Go’s latest studio album, Of the Blue Colour of the Sky, and hits the radiowaves on September 14th. To help promote the new music, the band is holding a contest Sept. 7 - Oct. 14, and it goes a little something like this…

Fans are invited to remix the single by getting “as creative as possible” and not being “afraid to redefine the song in both genre and feeling.” Starting Sept. 21, a winner will be picked each week by OK Go’s album producer, Dave Fridmann, and featured on their website. Select winners will even be available for download.

Naturally, the main prize is killer! One grand prize winner will claim fame and glory by having his or her remix mastered and made available for download via the video game “Rock Band.” How cool is that?! The top prize also includes a gaming console, a copy of “Rock Band 3″ and a set of “Rock Band” instruments.

Contest details will be posted on the OK Go website, which is also where the winner will be announced on October 29th.

OK Go’s “This Too Shall Pass” scores millions of YouTube hits

Proving once again that they are masters of viral marketing, OK Go’s latest video for their recent hit, “This Too Shall Pass” has surpassed more than 9.2 MILLION views on YouTube as of this writing. See it here.

The entire video (SPOILER ALERT!) takes place in a warehouse rigged like a giant game of Mousetrap. Dominos are falling, levers pull objects to drop on other objects that fly through the air to hit targets that set off a whole different reaction, and it goes on like this for 3 minutes 53 seconds to culminate with a cannon blast of paint onto the OK Go lads. Brilliant.

And effective. Their YouTube popularity has helped sales of OK Go tickets and merchandise, and given them better offers for shows and festivals. The band also recently split from their record label, EMI, to go indie, citing that EMI “failed to view the Internet as part of the music-selling business.”

Bad for EMI, good for OK Go! Can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

OK Go prepare for U.S. tour

OK Go is kicking off two months worth of shows on April 13 in support of their January 2010 album “Of the Blue Colour of the Sky.”

The tour will run in the U.S. from coast-to-coast and even make it up to Canada. OK Go just returned from touring Europe in January and February, and they are better than ever. The album “Of the Blue Colour of the Sky” is their third studio album, following “OK Go” in 2002 and “Oh No” in 2005.

The album name, lyrics and concept of “Of the Blue Colour of the Sky” are based on a pseudo scientific book called “The Influence of the Blue Ray of the Sunlight and of the Blue Colour of the Sky,” which was published in 1876 by General A.J. Pleasonton.

They named their album WHAT?

After three straight years of touring, OK Go are back with a new album to be released in September tentatively named “The Influence of the Blue Ray of the Sunlight and of the Blue Color of the Sky.”

The album is “a more contemplative record, but also much more anthemic, much dancier. And it’s a way more emotional record than anything we’ve done. So it’s both sadder and happier in its way,” said singer Damian Kulash.

OK Go Not a Go

OK Go recently had to cancel 2 shows scheduled in San Diego and Anaheim because Damian, their singer, got sick. Doctors orders - no singing for a few days.

The dates have already been rescheduled:
House of Blues, Anaheim - April 10th
House of Blues, San Diego - May 9th

In between, there has been a show slotted for the Double Door in Chicago, IL, on April 23rd.

And word on the street is that the new album, title TBD, is due out in August 2009. Stay tuned.

New Album, performances expected

Ok Go has lined up a few performances starting in March ’09, presumably after the band emerges from the recording studio with its first new album in nearly four years.
The Chicago-based group kicks off the outing March 6 in Philadelphia, the six-city expedition will hit venues in the Northeast during the second week of the month.

Ok Go announced on October 12, 2008 that they had handcrafted a new batch of rock songs and were polishing them off before launching a new album. They’re recording the new album with Dave Fridman somewhere in upstate New York. Fridman has produced and recorded various works from Flaming Lips albums to MGMT’s debut, and music from Café Tacuba, Low, Sleater-Kinney, and Sparklehorse. A tentative release date has not been confirmed.

OK Go was formed in Chicago in 1998. The original band members were Damian Kulash (lead vocals), Tim Nordwind (bass guitar), Dan Konopka (percussion) and Andy Duncan (keyboard). In 2005, Andy Ross replaced Andy Duncan.

Before Duncan’s departure, they released Brown Ep and Pink Ep, both in 2000 as well as OK Go in 2002.

Perhaps their most notable song/performance is “Here It Goes Again” which won them a Grammy for the Best Short Form Music Video in 2007.
